PROJECT RECAP:

User research about the effectivity of Design Thinking workshops in semi-open ecosystems, as experienced by participants and non-participants of our Munich series of “Solving Urban Challenges by Design Thinking”, proposing a 3-staged model of Design Thinking incubation, published at the Design Management Institute‘s global conference in Boston, MA.

DESIGN METHODOLOGY:

A few months after launching our “Solving Urban Challenges by Design Thinking” workshop series at Munich-based alma mater and overall fantastic tech management school slash startup breeding ground slash tech hub CDTM, we wanted to evaluate our workshop concept by mapping the understanding and opinion about Design Thinking before and after the workshop and measuring the knowledge about this topic in the surrounding ecosystem. Thus we conducted a quick survey, analysing 48 respondents (15 former workshop participants and 33 respondents with no prior Design Thinking knowledge in the expanded CDTM network) and proposing a 3-staged model of Design Thinking incubation. Our roadmap consisted of:

  • developing and running a “Design Thinking to solve Urban Challenges” workshop series
  • individual evaluation sheets by each participant instantly after the workshop for immediate feedback
  • follow-up eSurvey 2 months after the workshop to evaluate mid-term impact and distribution of knowledge
  • research paper and conference publication at DMI’s gloabl conference in Boston

OUTPUT:

Research publication “MINDSET BEYOND THE MYTH: Evaluating the Future Practice, Applicability and Teachability of Design Thinking through Workshop Challenges”, held in Boston, MA, August 2012: view slideshare or download paper.

KEY SKILLS:

  • research about latest Design Thinking methodologies
  • developing a workshop structure tailored to a Business School
  • design research through 2 surveys (the first instantly after the workshop, the second two months down the road)
  • developing a 3-staged model of Design Thinking incubation
  • condensing the results into a Design Research paper published and presented at the DMI’s global summit
